Flipping the mattress as a way to prolong its life cycle is an old belief passed on from generation-to-generation. No scientific study as of yet has proven its effectiveness in extending the durability of the mattress but it is still considered by many as a way to ensure its longevity. Why should you flip your mattress?

Flipping vs. Rotating, what’s the difference?


Flipping the mattress involves turning it over – the surface you sleep on will then face the base of the bed, giving you a fresh, dent-free side. Mattresses can be heavy so make sure to do it gently with a companion so you don’t put tension on your back. If you can, take this time to disinfect and deodorize by spraying with a water-vinegar solution and then airing it outdoors as well.


Not all mattresses should be flipped due to their composition. A lot of modern-day mattresses are made of different layers with different functions – usually with a memory foam layer on top for cooling and cushioning and a different material underneath that works to keep the mattress long-wearing. For these mattresses, rotating instead of flipping can be done.  Rotating the mattress means turning the mattress 180 degrees so that the top part will be the base (the foot of the bed) and vice versa.

How often should you flip or rotate your mattress?


A good quality mattress should typically be flipped or rotated every six months. This will allow for a longer lifespan. However, mattresses will still need to be replaced every 6-8 years to ensure proper back support and sanitation.

Accessories such as a mattress topper or a mattress protector could help in providing additional cushioning for the body. They can also help delay wear on the mattress and keep it clean.
