How To Get A Good Sleep When You Work Night Shift

22nd October , 2021

Getting a good sleep while working a nine-to-five is already a struggle in itself. But ensuring an ample amount of rest while working the night shift is a whole different story. In most cases, sleeping patterns are compromised because people have to go against their normal body clock to get the right rest. Although there are possible workarounds, irregular sleeping patterns may pose long-term health risks to an individual including heart disease, breast cancer, depression, and change in metabolism.

Many would say it’s an uphill battle to maintain a sleeping schedule, but with the right bed mattress, proper sleep hygiene, and self-care, night shifters can have the same amount of shut-eye as we do. Read about some of the listed tips on how you can make sure you get a good, satisfying sleep even if you work long hours at night:

Observe proper sleep hygiene

Your bedroom light might be keeping you awake, or maybe that uneven part on your mattress does. Make sure your bedroom is dimmed (or dark, whichever you prefer), quiet, and at a comfortable room temperature to help you fall asleep quickly. Also, keep your electronic devices away from your reach if you don’t want to succumb to another restless, sleepless night.

Go nowhere else but bed

There are a lot of temptations on your way home, but the key is never to give in. If you’re hungry, cook your meals at home or drive-thru a breakfast joint for quick takeaway food. Set aside some time for your other bouts and go to bed for now.

Sacrifice coffee for now

Most of us live off the day (or night) with caffeine adrenaline. Unfortunately, your coffee will have to take the backseat for now if you’re working the graveyard shift. Caffeine is a stimulant that keeps you awake for hours – and sometimes, it stretches up until your scheduled sleeping time. Try to consume coffee or tea at the start of your shift so the effect will be gone by the time you get home. A nice, high-quality bed mattress also has a great impact on getting a good night’s sleep.

Set boundaries

Similar to a nine-to-five, you should never respond to work-related emails or messages beyond your work shift. This will eat up your time and energy when you are supposed to be resting on your ultra-comfortable bed mattress. Make sure that the work gets done within your working hours and shut off your job the same time you shut your eyes.

Seek medical help

Working odd shifts or all night can cause alarming sleeping disorders and can be extremely hazardous to your health. If you feel your sleeping pattern is getting worse, it is best to seek professional help to ensure you get the optimum support you need.

There are many ways you can adjust your sleeping pattern according to your work shift. A nice, comfortable, firm bed mattress can help you achieve a healthy sleep cycle. Thus, a good combination of the right equipment and proper self-care is essential in unleashing your maximum potential at work and in life.
