Exploring The Science Of Memory Foam

Exploring The Science Of Memory Foam

Memory foam is a relatively recent innovation in the mattress world that promises comfort and support to all types of sleepers. The material is used in various kinds of mattresses; spring supported or even in combination with latex. Many wonder how it works and what it is made of. In this article, we will explore the science behind memory foam and why it is considered one of the best mattresses

What is memory foam?

It is a material primarily made of polyurethane sensitive to temperature and pressure. Various other chemicals and additives are added to the material to achieve the desired foam consistency. The bubbles in the foam are open, allowing air to circulate between them. When used in mattresses, this will enable the mattress to mold according to the shape of your body. The material is also referred to as low-resilience polyurethane foam or viscoelastic polyurethane foam.

The original memory foam was invented in the early 1970s by scientists at NASA. They wanted to develop a material that relieves pressure so that astronauts in the rocket cockpits can be cushioned against extreme forces during takeoff. The mattresses sold now are a newer and improved version that is incredibly beneficial for your health and sleep.

The problem with traditional mattresses

When you sleep on a traditional mattress, you can have problems sleeping. These mattresses usually consist of a soft material supported by several coiled metal springs. The coils will bend when you sleep on them, but it won’t conform to your body shape. Instead, it bends at the deepest part of your body. This results in certain areas not being adequately supported. If you sleep on your back, and your lower half dips below your spine, the latter will not have any support. If you are a side sleeper, your hips will not have support. This results in aches and soreness, affecting your quality of sleep and daily activities. While some mattresses compensate for this by increasing the number of springs and ensuring that each responds to applied pressure, these tend to be expensive.

How does memory foam help?

Instead of sleeping solely on springs, manufacturers place a thick layer of memory foam in the mattress. This can be on its own or is supported by springs. When you sleep on the foam, it bends according to your body shape, providing support to all parts of your body. When you get off the mattress, it will return back to its original shape. As the foam is temperature-sensitive, it will sink more depending on your body temperature. The mattress is suitable for all kinds of sleepers as it accommodates unique contours, ensuring that you are not applying excessive pressure at specific points and your spine remains straight.

Who benefits the most?

While everyone can benefit from sleeping on memory foam, it is considered brilliant for those suffering from chronic pains and arthritis, as it helps ease pressure and allows them to sleep comfortably.
